The midsize luxury sedan segment is a battleground for prestigious automotive giants. Its growing popularity has encouraged many vehicle manufacturers to venture into it. 2017 Mercedes-Benz E 300 and 2017 Jaguar XF are two of the top dogs in this class, and although they are both excellent vehicles, you will see that the E 300 is several notches above the XF.

Better Performance Luxury Sedan

2017 Mercedes-Benz E 300 exhibits the best of German engineering. Unlike most cars in its class, the E 300 makes use of only one engine specification across all trims. The dynamically turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine produces an impressive 241 and 273 pound-feet of torque. A 9-Speed automatic transmission drives the rear wheels and all wheels on standard models and 4MATIC® models respectively. The rear-drive model rushes to 60 mph in 7.0 seconds and is EPA-rated 22 city / 30 highway*. The 4MATIC® model fuel economy is estimated at 22 city / 29 highway*. The 2017 Jaguar XF carries a turbodiesel 2.0-liter four-cylinder that delivers 180 and 318 lb-ft of torque. The higher torque however, is no substitute for the extra costs that you would incur to service and maintain the XF's diesel engine. An eight-speed automatic transmission and rear-wheel drive come standard, with an all-wheel drive option on every trim.

Interior Features and Cargo Space

The redesigned 2017 Mercedes-Benz E 300 is much similar to Mercedes-Benz flagship S-Class. It adopts S-Class horizontal door-to-door layout and exhibits similarly impeccable craftsmanship. The interior utilizes high-quality materials and features ergonomically contoured and crafted seats. The central infotainment screen extends from the instrument panel and the control buttons are arranged logically to the driver's convenience. It is fitted with the latest Mercedes-Benz COMAND® infotainment system that includes a touchpad hovering above the central dial. The coupe provides 13.3 cubic feet of storage, and the convertible can hold up to 11.5 cubic feet (8.8 when the top is down).

The Jaguar XF offers almost similar interior amenities and space. However, its infotainment system is slower and less refined and does not yet support Android Auto or Apple CarPlay. The navigation system also supports only up to 3G internet connection which is disappointing considering the growing availability of 4G connections.

Smoother Handling and Drive

Although the new E 300 is available with a single four-cylinder engine, it offers top-class performance and a smooth ride at all speeds. It is equipped with robust breaks, a precise steering system, and a sophisticated suspension to facilitate an ultra-refined ride quality. The E3 00 sounds great, blocks outside noises, and offers long-range comfort coupled with confident handling. As expected, this sedan provides the same Mercedes-Benz agility and stability that its siblings are known for, and rivals can only dream of. There are higher versions in the E-Class line, but the E300 is comparably capable and equally refined. 2017 Jaguar XF is almost as nimble as its Mercedes-Benz counterpart. It is athletic and offers satisfying performance, just like other vehicles in the midsize luxury sedan class. However, it feels and sounds less enthusiastic than the E 300.
